Kyle "The Conjurer" Bloodworth-Thomason[1] is a supporting character of Fanboy & Chum Chum. He is a preteen wizard who has been banished from Milkweed Academy.

Background

Kyle had previously lived in England where he attended the wizardry school Milkweed Academy. However, he was expelled when he turned his teacher Professor Flan into a literal raspberry flan. He now attends Galaxy Hills Elementary School, where he befriended Fanboy and Chum Chum. More recently, Kyle tries to get re-admitted to Milkweed Academy, and although he never seems to be able to do this, he soon realizes he has real friends, and Galaxy Hills is a true home to him.

Description In The Series

Kyle "Milkweed Academy for Wizards" s1e1a

Kyle is an expelled student from Milkweed Academy for Wizards. Consequently, he will now attend regular public school. This punishment serves a massive blow to his ego, as he believes that he is destined to master all of sorcery and become the most powerful preteen wizard on the planet. Despite Kyle exhibiting his magical abilities upon meeting Fanboy and Chum Chum, they believe he is simply pretending, much to Kyle’s dismay. He's the second eldest of Fanboy's main group of friends, and the only one with braces and magic powers.

Kyle is introduced in the first episode as the "most powerful preteen wizard on the planet". After he made his dramatic entrance, no one but Fanboy and Chum Chum were interested. After he "borrows" a seat from Chris Chuggy, he becomes acquainted with the town's titular duo, Fanboy and Chum Chum, for the first time. They automatically assume he is a human simply playing make-believe. He later watches Fanboy pretending to be a wizard, and is completely unimpressed by his "magic". At lunch he plans to summon a griffin when after Fanboy used his fake spell book, chants the incantation. After Kyle accidentally de-levitates into Lupe's lunch, he gets punched and challenges Fanboy to a wizard-off. During that, Chum Chum faints from seeing Fanboy's cut-off finger trick and due to seeing them distracted after a revival went wrong, Kyle went entirely insane and possesses an energy sphere, armed to rough them up, but before he could get the attack out, the griffin Fanboy summoned earlier carried him away. The end scene showed Fanboy deciding to play wizard with Kyle all day tomorrow, while Kyle shouts "No, I won't!" in the distance. During the episode, Kyle showed absolutely no interest in Fanboy and Chum Chum's company.

Later on, Kyle starts to get used to his surroundings. He is now interested in having conversations with Fanboy and Chum Chum. The first episode to show that matter was "The Janitor Strikes Back". Kyle is usually interested in them, but other times, he gets extremely annoyed by them, and insults them often. They do not know this, but show they're sorry and care for him a lot. Kyle also usually tones his negative traits down when there is an emergency, or for other reasons. As the series goes, Kyle's relationship with Fanboy and Chum Chum seems to get stronger and gets mad and yells at them less. He also seems to return his feelings to them and entertain them as shown in "Cold War" and "Lord of the Rings. Beginning with the episode "Sigmund the Sorcerer", Kyle is usually much more friendly and less angry to them.

Personality

Kyle is a short-tempered and studious boy. He is proper, well-spoken, and thinks of himself rather highly. He resents that the other kids don't acknowledge his superiority and are oblivious to Kyle's disdain, but despite his cold front, Kyle craves friendship like everybody else; even malevolent wizards don’t like to sit at lunch alone.

He often views the world in such a negative light that he is rarely seen greeting anyone with a smile. He has a cynical attitude, a grandiose sense of self, and sees others as uncivilized while failing to accept his shortcomings. He often believes that Fanboy and Chum Chum are "dumb" due to not understanding their cheerful demeanors.

He is also manipulative, as he manipulates the duo into teaching him a ring trick in "Lord of the Rings". He is also deceitful, as he tricked the duo by making them think he saved them from the citizens trying to take the prize cup only to reveal he only took them farther away to have the cup for himself in "The Winners".

He also has an obsession with being "the most powerful pre-teen wizard", as he often plots that once he returns to Milkweed Academy he’ll become stronger with magic.

Kyle is also highly intelligent in magic and academics. Unfortunately, he often shows himself to be impulsive, and often lacking common sense. This is shown in "Buddy Up" where he refuses to listen to Fanboy and Chum Chum in taking the "Buddy System" seriously until he finds himself encountering a dinosaur. In "Hex Games" he has no idea how to get Sigmund's video game to work until Chum Chum points it out to him on what to do.

Physical Appearance

Kyle Bloodworth-Thomason

Kyle is a redhead with very large crooked teeth and braces. Kyle's head is large and bulbous. He also has two large bangs and the rest tucked behind his ears with two cowlicks on the back of his crown. His pale face is sharp and angular, sporting three sets of freckles, one set on both cheeks and one above his nose. He wears a red and yellow striped rugby pullover, dark grayish-blue pencil thin jeans, dark red high-top sneakers, and a long silky black cape.

As an infant, he wears a red and yellow striped bib with a fluffy yellow trim. His single bang is tightly curled against his forehead. He has giant eyelashes and a single tooth with a brace. He also has a slight blush.

He bears a strong resemblance to the town's only other British resident: Retchy Lintpockets, from season two.

Relationships

Main article: Fanboy-Kyle Relationship

Fanboy

Fanboy trying to convince Kyle to come on the field trip to the Dinosaur Museum

Kyle has a difficult friendship with Fanboy (as well as Chum Chum), mainly stemming from their opposing personalities and Kyle's own insecurities. However, their relationship has developed significantly throughout the show - Kyle starts off genuinely loathing him (in "Wizboy") to essentially becoming a situational tritagonist, returning affection, and affirming their friendship explicitly (e.g. in "Sigmund the Sorcerer").

Despite this, Kyle has a tendency throughout the show to revert back to antagonizing both Fanboy and Chum Chum, as well as berating the two. As is implied in episodes like "Cold War" and "The Winners", however, this is likely less due to Kyle genuinely hating them and more to do partly with his own paranoia. Kyle can be seen as insecure and often doubts other's intentions (especially with the confirmation that he was bullied and had no friends at Milkweed); when Fanboy and Chum Chum attempt to share their prize with him in The Winners, for example, he seems torn between accepting their offer and reverting back to his "evil loner" persona, out of fear that they're tricking him. His treatment toward them seems to be partly a defense mechanism. In episodes like "Fan vs Wild", Kyle is implied to actually crave some sort of deeper bond with them; in the scene where Fanboy and Chum Chum are sharing their presumed goodbyes with each other, Kyle seems awkward and stilted during their embrace and waits for them to acknowledge him. Kyle likely views them as his only friends and desires a closer companionship but is unable to initiate it/doesn't understand how to form proper connections, as he's never had friends before.

However, another large part of Kyle's treatment toward Fanboy and Chum Chum also simply stems from personality differences. While he doesn't despise them by any stretch - the way he pushes them away being more so a problem with insecurity - he does view them as idiotic and overwhelming. Fanboy especially can be too much for Kyle to handle at times, and the two have personalities that clash (both being so intense and yet so different). At the end of "Sigmund the Sorcerer", when Kyle shares a hug with the two followed by a poorly timed explosion, Kyle remarks "You two make it so difficult", implying that he feels that they often cause more trouble than is worth.

Kyle's relationship individually with Fanboy is likely more of a focus due to their mismatched personalities. Fanboy is crude and can often act or speak without thinking, either overwhelming or insulting Kyle, of whom prefers to stay reserved and think things through. One notable example of this is in "Man-Arctica the Ride", where Fanboy impulsively - and loudly - gets in Kyle's face and makes fun of him for seeming scared, alluding to the "Chicken Pox" episode. In other cases, Fanboy leans the opposite way, and can be overwhelmingly friendly/inviting, oftentimes invading Kyle's personal space or annoying him. This is especially an issue between Kyle's extreme introversion vs. Fanboy's extreme extroversion.

Kyle values intelligence, study and performance over all else whereas Fanboy is hyperactive and causes mayhem/drags others into his adventures. This leaves a gap of understanding between the two - however, Fanboy and Kyle both clearly still care about each other, offering help in times of need and on occasion balancing out each other's stronger traits. One noticeable way this occurs is in episodes such as "Excuse Me", where Fanboy and Chum Chum's carefree attitudes end up allowing Kyle to let loose as well, something rarely seen within the show due to his uptight personality. Kyle is noticeably a lot warmer with the two, such as when he holds hands with Fanboy in the aforementioned episode ("Wizboy" and "Eraser").

Chum Chum

Main article: Kyle-Chum Chum Relationship

Chum Chum gestures to Kyle when he adds that Sigmund is a "magic-ician"

Chum Chum and Kyle's relationship is largely covered in the previous section (being that his dynamic with the two is so closely tied together) - however, Chum Chum, being the less intense of the two titular characters, is much more manageable. Though Fanboy is intense and impulsive, Chum Chum is easier to deal with than Fanboy mainly due to being more mellow and sweet.

Kyle's conflict with him mostly comes from the chaos that he causes in conjunction with Fanboy, rather than any issue with Chum Chum himself (aside from his cheerful demeanor). In "Cold War", for example, he seems to enjoy playing with Chum Chum, until Fanboy joins and the two begin change up the rules a bit and unintentionally angering Kyle. Chum Chum is quite affectionate and often tries to engage with Kyle in a friendly way, to which Kyle seems surprisingly receptive of. For instance, in "Sigmund the Sorcerer", Chum Chum is the one to suggest a group hug between the three of them, of which Kyle happily accepts. However, this doesn't entirely stop Kyle from finding Chum Chum overwhelming, as Chum Chum’s high-spirited persona can annoy him just as much as Fanboy's shenanigans at times.

The two of them have a surprising lot in common - for example, they both have the same favorite food, as confirmed in "Lord of the Rings". Chum Chum, often being the smarter and less destructive of the titular duo, often also tends to find more common speaking ground with him.

Hank Mufflin

Although Kyle's relationship with Hank has been a little strained at first, he somewhat became Hank's star student. Hank first thought he was a screwball like Fanboy and Chum Chum, and had him sit with them which he declined. Kyle sometimes has his attention turned away from him when Hank starts to not listen to him. Also, he appears to have more stars than any other student, as told by Hank's gold star chart. Also, Kyle was Hank's former "class eraser-er" before Fanboy took over ("Wizboy", "The Book Report of the Dead", "Speed Eraser", "Norse-ing Around").

Scrivener Elf

Kyle "by my school chums" s1e11a

As Kyle's trusted adviser, Scrivener Elf is Kyle's right-hand man on his adventures. He's usually annoyed at Kyle, but always does what he says, like taking notes and doing homework. Scrivener Elf not only works for Kyle, but he also sometimes ditches the wizard to work for Professor Flan. But Kyle treats Scrivener Elf as a servant, and he demands things hardly. Even though he is annoyed, he listens to Kyle a lot and even helps Kyle out. Mostly, he ignores Kyle to focus on other things, like conga dancing and bathing.

Necronomicon

The diagnosis you seek

Necronomicon is known to be Kyle's trusted spell book and adviser. He keeps all the spells for Kyle handy, and even produces new ones. He also takes diagnoses for Kyle when he's sick. Sometimes, Necronomicon is annoyed by Kyle, like Scrivener Elf does. He usually calls Kyle by name, but in later episodes, he also refers to him as 'conjurer', hence his type. Necronomicon is a loyal helper.

Sigmund

Main article: Kyle-Sigmund Relationship
Sigmund disappearing - 1 s1e27a

As Kyle's longtime rival since Milkweed Academy, Sigmund seems to be always showing Kyle up. They have been enemies since a mishap in magic class. When they met with each other again, Kyle lies and tells Sigmund he is more skilled than him and wound up revealing the truth. Although they are enemies, the wizards sometimes show their soft side once in a while.

Boog

Kyle, like the other children, does not appear to like Boog because of inflicting bops on others. In Chimp Chomp Chumps Kyle is the second person that gets bopped by Boog in line, and later in the episode, he and the other students make fun of Boog. It is shown in A Bopwork Orange that Kyle is a little afraid of Boog. He hesitates to grab the gum because he fears that Boog will bop him. That unfortunately happens because Boog destroyed the security cameras inside the frosty mart. While Boog was tormenting Kyle, Kyle threatens to turn Boog into a toad.

Lenny

They don’t really have any interactions. The closest they’ve interacted is when Kyle buys a frosty freeze freeze from Lenny. However, in Fan vs wild Lenny tries to get Fanboy and Chum Chum (and possibly Kyle, because the broom could extend to get Kyle off the roof too.) off the roof but gets covered in snow. At the end of the episode, when Fanboy, Chum Chum, and Kyle leave. Lenny angrily tells them to stay off his roof. Lenny might be yelling at Kyle too, or only yelling at Fanboy and Chum Chum. In The Winners, when Fanboy and Chum Chum are cornered by the angry mob, the duo try to sort things out, but Kyle and Man-Arctica attempt to zap the two, but the two dodges it and it hits Lenny instead. And in Refill Madness, with how Boog and Lenny were annoyed with Oz allowed into the car, they were probably also annoyed with everyone else, including Kyle, being allowed in. So they probably don’t like each other.

Yo

Kyle "Get off!" s2e8b

They don’t really have any interactions. It is shown Kyle finds her overwhelming. The closest they’ve interacted is when Yo square dances with him and unintentionally overwhelms him in "Kids in the Hall".

Lupe

Lupe and Kyle - BG Helmet POV

They don’t really have any interactions. The closest they’ve interacted is when Kyle shows her magic tricks in "The Janitor Strikes Back".

Nancy

Nancy twists Kyle's arm s2e8b

Despite him never verbally interacting with her it is shown he finds her annoying and overwhelming. The closest they’ve interacted is when Nancy unintentionally twists his arm when attempting to dance with him in "Kids in the Hall". In "Sigmund the Sorcerer" Kyle assumes the reason Nancy is waiting at Tricks and Giggles is because she’s waiting for "free samples of fake doo-doo". In "Lord of the Rings" Nancy gets annoyed by Kyle when he begins mocking Fanboy and Chum Chum’s magic show.

Skills and Abilities

Magic

Main article: Magic

Kyle using magic on the game disk for Sigmund the Sorcerer's Wizard Challenge

Kyle is described as the "most powerful pre-teen wizard on the planet", declaring he is an expert in magic. He dedicates himself to studying it in Milkweed Academy. In the first episode, his magic was completely a skeptic to Fanboy and Chum Chum and he tries to prove he's real. Wizard magic is strong and important to him, and why he proves to not be a fake.

He usually carries a bronze-colored stick-like magic wand when spell casting. When he uses it, a special sound effect is heard, usually a rising and descending "whoop" sound. It's said Kyle keeps his wand in a secret pouch in his cape on the back. The wand got taken away or lost in the episodes "Wizboy", "Saving Private Chum Chum", "Kids in the Hall" and "Field Trip of Horrors".

Spells

Main article: Kyle's Spells

Due to being a wizard, he has spell-casting powers, and demonstrated a wide variety of spells.

He's known to be an excellent magician, and can use real magic rather than magician's magic, as shown in the episodes "Lord of the Rings" and "Present Not Accounted For". He can also manipulate energy as shown in "Wizboy" when he created a blue energy sphere.

According to his magic show in "Present Not Accounted For", Kyle was going to summon a Minotaur, and have it sing barbershop quartet, but in the completed episode, he summons a dragon to paint everyone's names in fire.

Despite being a Conjurer, he can use also Sorcery and Mysticism.

Hence his wizard type, Conjurer, Kyle is known for producing various objects and weapons, like a chainsaw in "Lord of the Rings", incantation book in "Tooth or Scare", and index cards for spells in "Wizboy".

When he uses his magic, even with his wand, he usually produces a magic aura to signify the magic's in effect. The aura he illuminates has glowed in four colors so far - amber, light rose, blue-gray and emerald, with light rose being the most common. The aura's color depends on the spell he's casting.

The light rose aura occurs usually when he teleports or conjures anything. The amber one is usually a basic light for the wand or substitute for conjuring. The blue-gray aura is used sometimes for energy manipulation or mind control, like in "Wizboy" when he made an energy sphere and "Lord of the Rings", when he charmed Fanboy and Chum Chum with his wand, showing he is a master hypnotist. The emerald aura was the latest; it was shown in "There Will Be Shrieks" when he summoned a Bailhok and confronted Mr. Trick.

Flying

Like Fanboy and Chum Chum, Kyle can fly. Sometimes he flies by himself, other times he flies on his handy broomstick, which was used in "Freeze Tag" and "Kids in the Hall". He can also levitate objects, as well as himself when calm. When levitating himself, he floats in a lotus-esque formation, with his eyes closed and fingers touching like a yogi. When he gets angry or is gloating while flying, an aura surrounds him all over.

Braininess

Kyle studying from flash cards proving his eidetic memory

Kyle studying from flash cards proving his eidetic memory

Kyle seems to have an eidetic memory, proving he can remember almost anything. He's known to study really hard so he can remember something later, sometimes using flash cards to help him ("Wizboy"). Sometimes he can easily stump someone, once he asked Fanboy a simple math question he couldn't remember ("I, Fanbot"). That shows his enhanced intelligence. He is also shown to not be afraid of vampires and to make fun of them. That shows that he is very proud about his magical heritage and his wizard powers, and he don't think that other supernatural beings have the same level of power. He is also a very good inventor and has quite a high vocabulary.

He also knows when intruders are messing up the house, so he sets his house up with booby traps, such as a moat, dragon and kraken, to prevent his house from falling to ruin.

Weakness

Insecurity/Self-consciousness

Kyle is shown doubt himself a lot and showing a constant need for external validation. He often assumes the worst in others and fearing abandonment and setting impossibly high standards to prove his worth.

Arrogance

Due to his low self-esteem he often acts superior and full of himself. He sometimes refuses to admit his mistakes, apologize, or accepting criticism.

Name-Calling

He tends to insult others when he thinks their ideas or actions are weird or wrong.

Rage/very short temper

When chaos happens or he sees or hears something he doesn’t agree with, he can harshly lash out his anger by making threats or trying to physically harm others.
